Crane Safety

New Regulations

Regulations came into effect in October 2003 affecting the operation of cranes on Western Australian building and construction sites. While these regulations only relate to building and construction sites, Goldfields Crane Hire has implemented these requirements to all cranes.

Audible and Visual Alarm Requirements

All cranes, other than non-slewing cranes, need to be fitted with external rated capacity indicator lighting and audible alarms.

The new provisions set out requirements for:

  • Green, amber and red lights to be emitted according to the percentage of the crane's rated capacity being lifted; and
  • Audible alarms to be fitted inside and outside the crane and be affective only if a load being lifted by the crane is greater than 100% of the crane's rated capacity.
  • Green lights represent up to 90% of rated load.
  • Amber lights represent between 90% & 100%.
  • Red light and audible alarm represent overload.

Safety Management

Our Safety Management Systems allow for these requirements as follows:

  • Lifts within the 90% of rated load are rated as Standard Lift (Job Hazard Analaysis if required).
  • Lifts in the range of 90–100% are rated as Critical Lift (JHA & Lift Study required).

These requirements ensure we supply the correct size crane to perform all tasks safely.

CraneSafe

The mobile crane industry has initiated a voluntary crane assessment program throughout Australia. Developed in consultation with the mobile crane industry as a whole, the program aims to augment existing safety standards with annual assessments of mobile cranes now being made by CraneSafe (a division of the Crane Industry Council of Australia).

The CraneSafe assessment program provides crane owners and operators with a:

  • Process for third party assessment of safety aspects of their cranes.
  • Common, industry-wide system for assessment of their cranes.
  • Single method by which crane operators and owners can fulfil their relevant duty of care obligations under Occupational Health and Safety and Safety Acts (OH&S).

Goldfields Crane Hire has implemented the CraneSafe assessment program to ensure all their mobile cranes are maintained and kept in excellent safe working condition.

Ancillary Equipment

GCH have a wide range of Ancillary Lifting Equipment. All equipment is approved, tested and certified before use and then inspected quarterly. GCH only purchase modern lifting equipment, including RUD & GUNNEBO grade 100 chain. We have implemented our own tagging system (as pictured) which enables us to tag equipment when inspected in line with electrical colour coding.

  • Red: January–March
  • Green: April–June
  • Blue: July–September
  • Yellow: October–December

All information is logged in an inspection card, and filed in each crane or rigging loft.

Equipment includes:

  • Spreader Bars ranging in capacities of 12–50 tonnes
  • drum & pallet lifters
  • one & two person work baskets
  • specialised slinging arrangements
  • etc.
